“SUSTAINING YOUR PASSION AND PURPOSE – HEALING IN COMMUNITY”
Saying what you mean, and doing what you promise is no longer the custom in our culture. Nowadays, it’s more common to say whatever people want to hear, or whatever you can get away with. Right and wrong is now determined by courts of law rather than a shared consensus about what’s ethical and moral. To succeed personally and professionally you must be authentic-- a person or organization whose words, actions and principles are all telling the same story. In his compelling style, Dr. H. shares his experience and wisdom in ways that will kindle your passion and purpose. Modern technology has replaced community and stories told around the campfire from one generation to the next are lost. Understanding how a return to community can power individual purpose will be the challenge faced by today’s leaders and their responsibility to the next generation of leaders.

PULSE: THE INTERNET AS THE ULTIMATE MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENT FOR BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT
Presented by: Doug Hubbard, President & Founder, Hubbard Decision Research
Author of How to Measure Anything and The Failure of Risk Management the current #1 bestseller in math for business and the top five bestseller book for risk management, respectively.
Doug is an internationally recognized expert in the field of IT value and is a popular speaker at numerous conferences. Mr. Hubbard was formerly with Coopers & Lybrand and has over 18 years experience in IT management consulting including 10 years experience specifically in teaching organizations to use his AIE method. His published articles are in Information Week, CIO Enterprise, and DBMS Magazine
Discussion: Doug will present his latest research into a new way to use the internet. As more people use Twitter, Facebook, Craigslist, eBay and Amazon, it is become more feasible to use the “tracks” they leave behind as an important source of business intelligence. Reports on the frequency of particular searches on Google can be used to determine if unemployment is decreasing or even to determine where flu outbreaks occur first. Ranks of books on Amazon can be analyzed to determine whether housing is recovering or if more people are going into their own business. New methods for searching blogs and twitter can give you the “buzz” on your company. The internet has become the most powerful socio-economic measurement tool in history – and is yet vastly underutilized for this purpose. Find out what’s next for this new way of analyzing trends in business, government, and popular culture.

"SHARING SECURELY: ENTERPRISE APPLICATIONS OF SOCIAL TOOLS" Presented by: Peter Coffee, Director of Platform Research, salesforce.com Peter Coffee, former Technology Editor of eWEEK, lays out a road map for planning well-governed social-media projects that achieve real business results.
Discussion: Every organization craves the collaboration tools, the vigorous communities, and the 360-degree views of real-time events that are demonstrated every day on social networks. Enjoying those benefits, without exposing vital assets and processes through unintended sharing, is key to creating an agile enterprise that can meet new competitive challenges. Peter Coffee, former Technology Editor of eWEEK, lays out a road map for planning well-governed social-media projects that achieve real business results.
Peter S. Vogel, Trial Partner, Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP and Adjunct Professor of the Law of eCommerce at SMU Peter is the Chair of the eDiscovery Group and Co-Chair of the Technology Industry Team. Before practicing law he worked as a computer programmer, received a Masters in Computer Science, and taught graduate courses in information systems.
Discussion: Social Media is transforming the use of the Internet and changing the way we view privacy; however there are significant legal issues. It is essential that CIOs understand legal issues of Social Media including: jurisdiction for disputes, terms of service, domain names, intellectual property, privacy, wikis, blogs, and crime. This presentation will give CIOs insight about how Courts around the world are dealing with these complex Social Media legal issues today and what the future portends.
Discussion: Why did LeBron James go to Miami? Because one person can’t carry a team to victory.
Leaders forget the X factor is their people. An employee’s level of commitment determines your ability to execute and deliver on strategic plans. Your talent is your competitive edge. How you lead and how you tap into that workforce determines what you can accomplish. So how long can you keep moving the needle with the team you have today? How much can you deliver when your VP of App Dev leaves? If you were asked to go lean and cut 25% of your staff, would you know where to start? What happens to your team when you decide to go to Miami?
Whether your organization utilizes formal succession planning practices or believes it’s a useless exercise, there are actions you can take as a CIO to increase transparency, productivity, and autonomy across your team. Our panel will demonstrate how succession planning and leadership development inside their organizations has created critical retention tactics, energized new product development, and netted new revenue in a down market. We’ll discuss the business strategy as well as the tactical practical details of implementing a plan and taking your current program to the next level. If you’ve been counting on the recession as your retention program, now’s your opportunity to garner ideas from your peers and take deliberate action to bolster and transform your team.
Remember: When a team isn’t performing, typically they don’t fire the team; they fire the coach.
"LEADERSHIP: LOOKING AT THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DISCIPLINE, LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD"
Darwin John, Former CIO, FBI
Darwin writes and speaks extensively across the country on leadership. He is a Strategic Adviser or Board member with a number of enterprises, in both the public and private sectors, and currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board to the FBI. He formerly served as Chief Information Officer for the FBI
Discussion: Darwin will speak to the realities of today and the requirements of the role of CIO going forward which will be both more complex and require more leadership capability. Beyond that he will speak to the "call to action" for those of us in the field, if we are to be responsive. This call to action will be about leadership that can deliver the basics of IT in a flawless manner. It is about earning ones way into the inner circle of leadership of the enterprise with earned trust, respect and credibility. It is about leading change in ones self and others. Therefore what must we do or do differently. This will include proactive approaches to the transformation required between where we are and where we must be. Finally, will be a period of dialog with the attendees to explore, challenge, probe and test concepts presented.
SIM IT PROCUREMENT WORKING GROUP: SOFTWARE PROCUREMENT - OPPORTUNITIES, PITFALLS AND THE PROCESS
Randy Roth, Partner, Corporate Contracts, LLC and Co-Chair, SIM IT Procurement Working Group; Board of Directors representing SIM-AFFECT (Amaricans for Fair Electronic Commerce Transactions); Board of Directors, Iowa Make-a-Wish Foundation
Discussion: Few organizations subscribe to today's best practices in the sourcing of high technology goods and services, especially software. This oversight can cost the company money and result in less than ideal contract terms. Through a proven process by which you can control the flow of information, a formal software sourcing strategy can guarantee more value, a faster return on investment, and less risk to your organization. The primary benefits from this process for improving your company’s bottom line include:
Reducing the total cost you pay for software
Learning what information that should not go to the supplier
Mitigating your exposure to risk and potential liability
Increasing your knowledge of important contract provisions
Increasing your budget accuracy
Bringing consistency and efficiency to your negotiation process
Speaker, Randy Roth will discuss the current key trends and process for strategic software sourcing: selection criteria, negotiable and non-negotiable contract terms, aspects of contract and relationship management, control of information between the vendor and your company, and gaining the most value from the transaction.
Presented by: Hank Zupnick, CIO, GE Capital Real Estate (GECRE), a division of GE Capital Michele Gabriele, Managing Director, North America Technologies, GE Capital Real Estate
Discussion: A well designed, well-implemented IT Governance process offers clear opportunities to stabilize or even grow IT budgets despite the continuing pressures of an anemic economy. However, IT Portfolio Management, the foundation of IT Governance, often ends in disappointment. To successfully apply IT Portfolio Management and the broader framework of IT Governance, IT leaders must develop an IT Portfolio Management vision and process that is consistent with their organization’s working dynamics. GE Capital Real Estate’s path to success with IT Portfolio Management and IT Governance offers a clear roadmap to similar success for SIMposium attendees.
Presented by: Dan Webber, CIO, Prime Holdings BV Panelists: Judy Mod, President, Social Executive Council (SEC)
Todd Michaud, VP IT, FOCUS Brands
Discussion: The Social Executive Council (SEC), the leading global Social Business organization for cross-functional executive officer (CXO) and senior executives (VP and above) , was specifically created to assist senior executives to explore the definition of social market leadership; the social transformation of the core enterprise lifecycles; customer, operational, product, information and employee, that drive the market success and corporation valuation of an organization. With over 785 senior executives, the SEC has reached a critical mass with over 20% of the Fortune 100 companies represented at the senior executive level and with a majority of the senior executives in charge of implementing social business initiatives globally.
The Social Executive Council (SEC) leadership team will lead a discussion focused on assisting attendees to understand why CIOs should care about Social Business, define the areas for Implementing a Social Business Initiative, introduce a comprehensive Social Business Architectural Framework, and provide tangible next steps for implementing Social Business initiatives.
More specifically, Judy Mod, president of the SEC, Todd Michaud, Vice President of IT at Focus Brands and Dan Webber, CIO at PRIME BV will discuss:
Social attributes applicable to improving business functions in the enterprise
Business impact elements to help ground your social enablement programs
Social Business Framework that will enable organizations to map their social efforts into a cohesive strategy. Additionally, the session will provide definitions around Social Media, Marketing, Business, Architecture, etc. as well as, lead a discussion around representative Social Business IT projects such as social CRM, social governance, and social business Intelligence.
Bruce Leidal, PMP, Chief Information Officer, Carestream
Discussion: Have you ever run a high profile project? Find it a challenge to understand where the executives were coming from? Tough to get the presentation in the right order to anticipate the questions?
In this presentation we will have the opportunity to understand what drives executives, what executives expect from project managers, how to use tools to focus conversations, and setup solid governance to ensure success.
Greg Mueller, IT Director, Central Services, H.B. Fuller
Discussion: In 2005, H.B. Fuller attempted to outsource their IT challenges when it entered into a 10 year outsourcing agreement and eliminated the majority of their former IT employees. The outsourcing firm was to provide best practices, development and infrastructure support. Three years later, IT service delivery continued to be a challenge for the company. The issues related to the IT performance prompted H.B. Fuller’s new leadership to explore its options under the contract. H.B. Fuller hired a professional negotiation team to revise the agreement. The resulting disciplined approach, based on Lean Six Sigma principals, enabled H.B. Fuller to revise the core agreement to reduce complexity and reduce cost, retire its complex legacy environment, and regain control of their IT function. The resulting organization is more productive, more efficient, and more effective at delivering business value for H.B. Fuller.
Moderated by: Dan Russell, Vice President, CIBER, South East
Panelists: Dr. Eric Threatt, IT Strategy Practice, CIBER
Discussion: The role of IT is changing - the IT organization needs to partner with the business to create value and drive business results, manage a portfolio of initiatives to create new value, and be able to communicate in business terms. Is it really possible to improve alignment between IT and the business and influence the real and perceived value of IT in the process? Hear lessons learned and best practices used to gain a strong alignment with the business and transition IT from a cost center to a value provider in midsized/large commercial companies. Specific points of discussion will include proven organizational and process approaches that will help to ensure a sound IT service quality strategy. This session will be a facilitated panel discussion with questions from the audience and will NOT be an exercise in death from PowerPoint.
"USING ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE TO DELIVER STRATEGIC INNOVATION AND PRESERVE KNOWLEDGE"
Moderated by: Leon A. Kappelman, Research Scientist and Professor of IS, College of Business, University of North Texas
Panelists: Larry Burgess, Senior Enterprise Architect, Aviall Services
John A. Zachman, Author, thought leader, and originator of the "Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture", CEO, Zachman International
Rolando Hernandez, Knowledge Engineer & Business Rules Architect, BizRules.com
Discussion: This session examines two real world examples where Enterprise Architecture (EA) concepts were used to deliver innovation and bottom-line value across multiple organizations: Aviall Services was able to extend its business capacity by creating virtual branch models across trading partners. This involved developing a 360-degree view of the business environment across multiple organizations, articulating comprehensive data integration requirements, defining incremental integration activities that deliver value quickly with reduced risk, and creating solution components and services that can be leveraged in other programs and processes across the organization. Mobil Oil created a knowledge supply chain to preserve, share, and automate their most valuable assets: knowledge, wisdom, and intellectual capital. Every company has a knowledge supply chain of new hires, experienced staff, experts, and super experts. What most companies lack is a way to retain critical knowledge and expertise that is difficult to recover once an expert leaves the company or retires. Mobil developed a process to capture knowledge and model how experts think: how they solve problems, make decisions, give expert advice and recommendations, configure products, troubleshoot equipment failures, stop oil spills, and so on. EA models were used for knowledge transfer and rule engines were used for knowledge automation. This preserved Mobil’s most valuable assets and strengthened the knowledge supply chain. Enterprise Architecture provides a framework to achieve these results, manage complexity, and remain agile to future change.
